GREETINGS TO ALL DESCENDANTS OF PETER ADOLPH FORSGREN

Please know that this blog is very much a work in progress. I will be adding information to each blog post as I have time and as new information or photos are acquired....so, please, come back often to see if anything new for your particular ancestor has been updated. I welcome your participation in fleshing out each post. There are some descendants about whom I have a great deal of information and some about whom I know very little.

I have served as the Secretary/Archivist for the Forsgren Family Association for many years and have acquired a lot of material. It is my desire to make it all available through this blog so that all may benefit. But I am only one person and there are thousands of Peter A descendants. Please contact me and help by notifying me of errors or clarifications or to submit information and photos you might have.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, all the descendants of Peter Adolph Forsgren have been very prolific....so the task of uploading all the photos, data and documents for this branch of the Forsgren siblings will be a very time-consuming process.... so...

Thank you so much for your patience!! ENJOY!!!

CHILD #1 - Sarah Christine Forsgren (and spouse #2, John "L" Christensen) & Descendants

Sarah Christine Forsgren Klem Christensen
(Please note that although this post was started in January of 2011 new information continues to be added to it)

I am indebted to Jean Tyson of Kent, Washington for this wonderful photo and& to her and Erma Walsh of Ogden for most of the information that I will be uploading to this post.  For many years I have yearned to know more about this lovely woman for there were no photos of her or her children among the things I inherited from my grandmother (a daughter of Sarah's brother Adolph Peter) and none of Sarah's descendants have ever come to a Forsgren Reunion during the 20 or so years I have been active in them.   I  hope to continue to learn more and find other data to flesh out this post on Sarah.

SARAH CHRISTINE FORSGREN - Summary:  Born 23 July 1854 in Brigham City, Box Elder, Utah.  Died 16 November 1949 in Salt Lake City and was buried 19 November 1949 in the Brigham City Cemetery.
Sarah married 1) Christian Christensen Klem on 10 April 1870 in the Salt Lake Endowment House.  Christian died just 6 years later.  There were three children born to this marriage.
Sarah married 2) John "L" Christensen, a good friend of her former husband, on 25 March 1880, also in the Endowment House.  (This marriage with yet another entrance of the name Christensen has caused a lot of confusion in her descendants!). Eight children were born to this marriage, and, of course, John acted as "father" to Lorinda, the only living child from Sarah's first marriage.
We will consider each of these in turn.

BIOGRAPHY: "SARAH FORSGREN CHRISTENSEN" Submited by White Pine Camp, Franklin County Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Photocopy in possess. of Forsgren Family Assn. No author is listed but on the last page the name "Leona F. Forsgren - White Pine Camp" is handwritten. It is unknown if she is the submitter of the sketch or the author.

" In the early spring of 1853, a group of pioneers on their way to Utah, delayed their trek and in a festive mood built a bowery of apple blossoms under which Peter A. Forsgren and Anna Christina Knudson were united in marriage. They were among the first organized companies of Latter-day Saints to emigrate from Scandinavia and they arrived in what is now Brigham City late in the fall of 1853 and were given living quarters in the "Old Fort." On July 23, 1854 a little girl was born to them and they called her Sarah. She was the first white child born in Brigham City.

Her childhood days were filled with both joys and sorrows and the hardships of all the pioneer children. She was the oldest of a family of eight children and many of the home duties fell upon her young shoulders. She helped her parents weave cloth and carpets and when she could be spared from her many responsibilities she attended a school taught by Mrs Ralphs and Mrs. Box. This school was held in their homes. Books and papers were indeed treasured possessions since her father had to bring them from Salt Lake by ox-team. Her mother became interested in the work and care of growing cocoons, reeling of silk, and the weaving of the same. Many yards of this silk were woven for the use of her family and for sale, receiving as much as two dollars per yard.

In her teens she herded cows on the mountain side out east of town, and being fond of segos used this opportunity to satisfy her desire. Later on she cooked for her father while he farmed on Bear River. During the summer months, after her work in the home was finished, she would carry her father's lunch to him in the fields and often assist him with his work.

As a child the ever-present fear of the coming of the Indians was a torture to her. Often in the still of the night their warwhoops or cries could be heard. Often summons would come to her father that the Indians were approaching and he would leave his family to assist in fighting them off.

At the age of eighteen years she married Christian Clements [sic - should read KLEM] on April 10, 1872 in the Endowment House in Salt Lake. Three children were born of this union. A great sadness came into her early life in the loss of her husband and two small sons, Clarence and Peter Mahonroy all within the short period of four months. Her great sorrow weakened her faith in God and it was only through the understanding of her father and his administrations and prayers that her health of body and her faith in God was restored. Now she had to work to provide for her [daughter]. She obtained work from Eliza R. Snow who taught her to make temple and burial clothes which she did for many years.

On March 25, 1880 she was married in the Endowment House at Salt Lake City, to John L. Christensen who had been a bosom friend to her former husband, the two having filled a mission to Dixie. Eight children were born to them: John S., Eli,Orleen, Lettie, Wilford, Emille, Hazel and Leland. Through their hard work and thrift they built a home of happiness and contentment until September 10, 1919 when her husband was again taken from her. A further great sadness came in the death of her son Eli on April 3, 1934. He left ten children without father or mother and she helped to care for them.

She was always active and ardent in her church work and raised her children in a religious atmosphere. She was a charter member in the organization of the Relief Society and was an active Ward Visiting Teacher continuously from the time of its organization in 1930 until she became too old and weak to carry on. Many nights were spent at the bedside of the sick, caring for them and doing whtever she could to relieve their pain and sufferering. She was always ready and willing to carry food and do whatever other assistance she could to the sick and needy. At the time of World War I she did her part in knitting sweaters and sent one of her sons to fight for his country.

Her birthday was often celebrated by the family in the canyons and resorts of Utah as her birthday came in July. On her 84th birthday she was pleased to receive at her home, many of her friends, townspeople and neighbors, numbering approximately 200. On November 11, 1939 she was honored at a reception held in the Lion House in Salt Lake City by the former residents of Brigham City now making their homes in Salt Lake. The Sixth Ward Relief Society honored her at a social, paying their respects to her as a charter member of their organization, and happy has been her lot to be honored by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers on May 26, 1939.

She lived a full life in Brigham City except for a few winters spent in Salt Lake City with her daughter when she became old and incapacitated. Her genial, cheerful disposition won for her many friends wherever she went.

She passed away at the home of her daughter at the ripe age of 96. She had been spry and cheerful until the last few months of her life."

[This is another account, very similar to the one above]  SKETCH OF LIFE OF SARAH FORSGREN CHRISTENSEN  by Hazel Christensen and Lettie C. Cheney, her daughters. ( May 5, 1939)
In the early spring of 1853, a group of pioneers, on their way to Utah, delayed their tiresome trek and in a festive mood built a bowery of apple blossoms under which Peter A. Forsgren and Anna Christina Knudson were united in marriage. These young people were in the first organized company of Latter-day Saints to emigrate from Scandinavia and they arrived in what is now Brigham City in the fall of 1853, and were, at first given living accommodations with residents of "The Old Fort."
On July 23, 1854, was born to this young couple a daughter, whom they named Sarah.  The childhood days of Sarah were filled with both the joys and the hardships of those experienced by all pioneer children. Being the eldest of a family of eight children many duties of the home fell upon her young shoulders. Her parents were engaged in the weaving of cloth and carpets and with this added industry going on in the home there were many responsibilities that must be assumed by hands that had become so efficient while yet so young. When she could be spared from these responsibilities she attended school taught by Mrs. Ralphs and Mrs. Box, which was held in their log homes. Books and slates and paper were indeed treasured possessions in those early days since her father would be required to go the long way to Salt Lake by ox team to get them. Her mother became interested in the work and care of growing cocoons, reeling of silk and
the weaving of the same. Many yards of this silk were woven for the use of her family and for sale, receiving as much as two dollars per yard.
All during the summer months, after her work in the house was finished, Sarah would carry her father's lunch to him in the fields and often be able to assist him in his work.  She recalls as they were hoeing the corn, her father saw locusts coming and running to the well for rope, and gathering what others he could find, and she on one end and her father on the other they dragged it over the wheat, Foods at first were not plentiful and much hard labor and toil had to go into the preservation of what they had.
As a child ever present fear of the coming of the Indians was a torture to her. Often in the still of the night could be heard their war hoops and cries. She tells of many incidents of someone coming to tell her father that the Indians were approaching, and he would leave his family in fear to assist in fighting them off.
At the age of 18 years, April 10, 1872, she married Christian Klem in the Endowment House in Salt Lake, and three children were born to this union. Lorinda the oldest daughter is the only surviving child.(Deceased) A very great sadness came into her early married life in the death of her husband and two small sons, Clarence and Peter, all within the short period of four months. Her sorrow was so great in the loss of her loved ones that her faith in God weakened. Her father understanding her condition, prayed for her, and through his administering and prayers, her faith in God and her health of body was restored. Now the task of providing for her child was the problem. Through the answering of her prayers, and the kindness of friends and neighbors, ways and means were provided for her. — Eliza R. Snow gave her the work and taught her how to make temple and burial clothes, which she did for many years, in addition to other sewing.
On March 25, 1880 she was married in the Endowment House at Salt Lake City to John L. Christensen, who was a bosom friend of her former husband, the two having filled a mission to Dixie. Eight children were born to them, John S. (now living in California), Eli (died Apr 3, 1934), Orlean (dead), Lettie Cheney (living), Wilford (died in January 1949), Emille (living), Hazel (living), Leland (living). Through their hard
work and thrift they built a home of happiness and contentment. This happiness was again clouded in the passing of our father on Sept 10, 1919. He had been a devoted husband and father, his entire interests being in the home. A further great sadness came into her life in the death of her son Eli, on Apr 3, 1934. This loss was made particularly great as it left ten children without father or mother. Inez, the mother, having died on
Dec 15, 1921.
Mother finds great joy and pride in her family, which now numbers 69, 7 living children, 41 grand children, 10 gret grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She has lived to form a five generation picture of first born daughters. (The picture was taken at Ogden Apr 2, 1939, when the great-great grandchild was five weeks old.) Mother has always been active and ardent in her Church work. She was raised in an entirely religious atmosphere, her father being the first convert baptized into the L.D.S. Church in Scandinavia; later being in the Bishopric with Bishop Henery Tingey, and he was a Patriarch of the Church at the time of his death. Mother is a charter member in the organization of the Relief Society and has been an active Block Teacher continuously since its organization until 1930. Many nights have been spent at the bedside of the sick, caring and doing whatever she could to relieve pain and suffering. She has always been ready and willing to carry food and whatever other assistance she could to the sick and needy. At the time of the First World War she did her bit in the knitting of socks and sweaters, and she had a son respond to the call of our country.
Mother delights in reliving and recalling the pleasures and experiences of her younger days, as well as dwelling upon the more recent ones. Especially vivid are the scenes and cities visited by her on a trip to California in the winter of 1923. She has appreciated and enjoyed many birthday gatherings of her family which have often been celebrated in the canyons and resorts of Utah, because of her birth date being in the warm month of July.  Particularly was she pleased to receive at her home and greet so many of her friends,
townspeople and neighbors, numbering approximately 200, at a Birthday Tea on her 84th birthday. On Nov 11, 1930 she was honored at a reception held at the Lion House in Salt Lake by former residents of Brigham City, now making their homes in Salt Lake. The Sixth Ward Relief Society honored her at a social, paying their respects to her as a charter member of the organization. And happy has been her anticipation, after learning she is to be a guest on May 26, 1939 of the Daughters of the Pioneers.  She has lived a full life and continuously in Brigham City, except for winters since 1932 spent in Salt Lake City. She has lived to see the city grow from approximately fifty families to its now over five thousand population; to see many of the log and adobe homes replaced with lovely modern ones; to see the city develop from the smaller acreage of the Old Fort to its present boundaries; to see the prophecy of Brigham Young fulfilled (which she heard him make in person) to see the "Streets paved with gold" and to see the Brigham City Cemetery fill from one little grave to its present expanded capacity.
Her genial, cheerful disposition wins her friends wherever she goes. And in this, the Autumn of her life, she is reaping and enjoying the blessings of health and contentment and the love of her family and friends.
Sarah is on the left.  Jean Tyson believes the woman on the right might be Vinnie Alice Olsen who was the first wife of Leland Vernon Christensen.  They had two children and divorced.  Vinnie later married James Sanford Hemming.  (She and James are buried in Brigham City Cemetery near the creek)

Oops!  I forgot to ask who the two gentlemen are!

This is the home at 205 Hampton Ave, in Salt Lake (as it appeared in 2011) where Sarah F. Christensen lived with her daughter Lettie in her later years.  The house is part of a small market that sits on the corner of Hampton Ave. & South 200 East, SLC.  I do not know if that was always the case or if the house once occupied the whole building.
The Previous article about Sarah's 95th Birthday was published in July of 1949. She lived just four months after that celebration of her long life.

MEMORIES OF SARAH: Jean Tyson of Kent, Washington sent me an email after discovering the Forsgren blogs on the internet. She is the great grand daughter of Sarah (back thru Norma Vere Christensen Tyson, daughter of Eli Lachoneus Christensen). She said, "I remember my ggrandmother quite well. I remember beautiful snowy white hair, a serene expression and smooth skin, a dignity that inspired respect. As a child I thought she was as old as the hills. I once asked her what she did to get so old, and she replied that she ate oatmeal every day. I decided then and there that I would settle for a shorter life. It just didn't seem worth eating yucky oatmeal every day just to live a long life! I also remember a beautiful carved child's rocking chair which she told me her father Peter had made for her when she was a chld. I'm not sure where the chair is now, but feel quite sure it is in the family somewhere."

This beautiful, well preserved, quilt was used by Sarah Forsgren Christensen and is located in a storage room at the Brigham City Museum (located in the basement of the Sr. Citizen's center);  There is a "pioneer bedroom" display at the museum which states that the coverlet was used by Sarah Forsgren and donated by [her daughter] Hazel.  But the quilt is no longer in that display - probably to protect it.  I do not know if Sarah made the quilt or just used it.

SARAH'S SECOND HUSBAND:  JOHN "L" CHRISTENSEN:

SKETCH OF MY FATHER: JOHN L. CHRISTENSEN  by Hazel Christensen, his daughter
John L. Christensen, also known as Jorgen Hansen on his family pedigree chart made from records from Denmark, was born June 2, 1849, in Resnes, Maribo, Denmark, the eldest child of Hans Jorgen Christensen and Maren Katrine Pedersen. Not much is known of my Father's early life in Resnes, but while in his teens he became acquainted and friendly with some L.D.S. missionaries in Denmark, (Their names I do not know.), but apparently he was interested in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and in going to Utah. Missionaries assisted him in providing the ways and means for him to leave Denmark, and his family sailed to America. I have understood there was some problem in him leaving Denmark, as young boys were required to do a term of military service for their country. Some years ago I tried to make a search to learn the name of the ship he came on, the date and any information I could about the trip, but was unsuccessful. I had understood also he came to America when he was about 16 years of age but do not know if he came under the name of John Christensen or Jorgen Hansen, His father being Hans Jorgen Christensen, and in Denmark they have a custom of changing names about as they pass to the children, so I presume that is the reason the pedigree sheet shows him as Jorgen Hansen; the birth date coincides.
There were several John Christensens living in Brigham City where he made his home, so he assumed and used the initial "L" to more completely identify him from the others so named. Early records in Brigham City show he was baptized September 6, 1866 by Nels Rasmussen and confirmed the same day by N. H. Nelson. Another record shows he was re-baptized March 22, 1880. He performed a work mission to Utah's Dixie in 1874 working in the construction of the St. George Temple (which was dedicated April
6, 1877). He was married March 25, 1880 to Sarah Christine Forsgren Klem by D. H. Wells in the Salt Lake Endowment House, but not sealed to her as she was a young widow having previously been married and sealed to Christian Christensen Klem.
My father, John L Christensen was a very even-tempered man. I never remember hearing a cross argument between my mother and father. He was a rather quiet and retiring man, loved his home and family. He enjoyed reading a lot and kept current of events and was very interested in reading histories of the Church and its leaders and what went on in the world about him. He was a good American, always taking advantage of his privilege of casting his vote at every election time.
My father was industrious, interested in growing things; he loved the land and cultivated it, producing an orchard of peaches, some cherries and apricots; also tomatoes for the cannery, cantaloupes, watermelons, some dewberries and raspberries, and on another farm he raised sugar beets, alfalfa, potatoes, and wheat, and he always had a family garden at home. This home, the only one I lived in, was a two-story adobe
residence built in 1890 on a one and a quarter acre lot located at the NE corner of 4th South St. and 1st East and running east to 2nd East in Brigham City, Utah. In the year 1907 or 1908, their son Eli L. Christensen built his home on the 2nd East Street of this acreage where he and his wife Inez Dick Christensen raised their family.
John L. Christensen died September 10, 1919 in Brigham City, Utah and was buried in the Brigham City Cemetery family plot. He was the father of eight children. He was a kind and loving father, He also assisted raising and making a home for Lorinda Klem Funk, who was the daughter of his wife's first marriage, until she married.
Additional information added April 20, 1999 by Susan B. Wagner, great grandaughter: [This page along with a photo of John L. Christensen and of the Christensen family are all together in the DUP archives, submitted by Susan Wagner, SLC, Utah, April 1999 - Spring Run DUP Camp. A scanned copy of these documents are also in the Forsgren Family Assn. Docs File]
Jorgen Christensen is listed on the 1865 Immigration List of Capt. Miner G. Atwood's Company. "In 1865 a company of emigrating Saints, numbering 557 souls, left Copenhagen by the steamer "Aurora", May 4, 1865. The emigrants proceeded to Hamburg where the company boarded the double-decked ship, the B.S. Kimball. The ship sailed to New York Harbor, arriving June 14th. The following day the emigrants landed at Castle Gardens. They traveled by train to Quincy, Illinois, where they arrived on the 20th. Here they were ferried across the Mississippi River, traveled to St. Joseph, and by steamboat up the Missouri River to Wyoming, Nebraska. The company of Scandinavian emigranats was organized and appointed to Miner G. Atwood's company. They arrived in the Salt Lake valley November 8, 1865."
The 1870 Brigham City, Box Elder County census lists a John Christensen living at the home of Bishop Alvin Nichols.
The following details taken from the "History of Box Elder County" may be interesting:
"December 15, 1870 the articles of incorporation of the Brigham Manufacturing and Mercantile Association were filed. The institution was later controlled by a United Order Council consisting of sixty influential citizens of the county. Two of the sixty listed are Alvin Nichols and Peter A. Forsgren (future father-in-law). On the 22nd of October, 1874, a company of Box Elder County men lwft Brigham City for Washington County, Utah. Land had been secured there, and these men were called by President Lorenzo Snow to transform that sandy oasis into a vineyard and cotton farm.
They fenced the holdings, dug ditches and got water onto the land, planted acres of grape vines and row upon row of cotton, quarried and hauled rock, built a huse, chicken coops, barns, corrals and planted a garden. When the places began to assume the appearance of a farm it was named "The Brigham City Cotton Farm."
Mention is also made of topping cane, making wine, and boxing raisins. The cotton was ginned and baled at the Brigham City Cotton Farm but was hauled to Washington City to be spun into thread. From here it was hauled to the Woolen Mills at Brigham City and used in making cloth.
One of the names that appear on the payroll kept at the Camp is John L. Christensen. We say payroll, but in justice to these men and women it should be understood that this call was a working mission and that the mere pittance they received was in "Home D" and was negotiable only with the various departments of the Cooperative Institution."
During this time John became close friends with Christian Christensen Klem. Christian was married to Sarah Christine Forsgren and they had one daughter, Lorinda, two sons, Clarence and Peter. Sadly within five months Sarah's husband Christian passed away December 7, 1878, her son Peter passed away January 2, 1879 and her other son Clarence passed away April 6, 1879. John and Sarah were then married March 25, 1880. [It then lists their children].
At the Daughters of utah Pioneers Museum in Brigham City there are the following items donated by the family: a sewing machine and dinner plates with a water pitcher which belonged to Sarah, also a child's rocking chair, which belonged to John and Sarah's daughter Hazel. There is a loom shuttle which belonged to Sarah's father Peter which he used to weave carpet. Some of his carpet was laid in the Logan Temple.
At the DUP Museum in Salt Lake City there are pictures of Sarah's parents Peter Adolf Forsgren and Anna Christina Knudsen, on display in the Jensen Room along with a water pitcher and brooch.
Enclosed is a portrait of John L. Christensen and also a family portrait taken in 1902."

This is the home of John and Sarah F. Christensen (taken Sept. 2011)  337 South 1st East in Brigham City.  The home was featured in a newspaper article (along with the home of Sarah's brother Oscar Forsgren) about mansard roofs.  Unfortunately I didn't copy the date of the article but it would have had to have been after 1902 when Oscar's home was built)

MEMORIES OF OUR PARENTS: Inez and Eli Christensen

by Doris Christensen Tingey, June 26, 1982
Their first home was in a house on the east side of the street on First East between 4th and 5th South. I was born in this house. I don't know if John was born here or in the next home just north of Chris Hoist's store on Main Street between 4th and 3rd South. It was here that I became aware of things. One afternoon there was a terrific thunder and lightening storm. The canvas picture that was hanging on the wall was completely burned out of the frame. I remember coming to, lying out on the side of the ditch bank with Bro. Hoist and Mother trying to revive me.
Dad had just completed a new home for us, on a lot Grandpa Christensen had given him, on 2" E. between 3rd and 4 South. Norma was the first baby born here. Then came May, Verna, Ross, Dee, Inez, Beth, and Don. For such a large growing family Dad had to build more onto the house. A larger cellar, our first bathroom, two bedrooms, a hall, bigger kitchen, and a large enclosed porch which was the bedroom for the boys. Dad was a very good carpenter. I was told that he never thought one nail was enough, so he added more to be sure it was solid. Darlene still has a table he made for her when she was a little girl which she still uses for her grandchildren and is just as sturdy as when it was built. He was foreman for Merrill's Planing Mill for most of his adult life. The nicest thing I remember about this house was the large front porch. We used to spend a lot of time in the summer on it especially to watch the thunder and lightening storms.
Each baby as it arrived was so loved and wanted and all were born at home. I still remember one night a few days before Christmas. Mother and Dad getting ready for a party with their friends. Mother looked so pretty in a new dress and her hair was always so nice, dark and naturally curly. They had to come home about midnight and Ross was there to greet us when we got up in the morning. Don also arrived near Christmas time.
In those days the mother stayed in bed for ten days after a delivery. On the day she was to get up, she had a bad strep infection and in a few days it turned into pneumonia. She passed away when Don was 17 days old. Lizzie asked Dad if they couldn't take the baby and raise him. So with many tears from all of us he consented for them to take him.
They later adopted him legally. Don was a very lucky little boy to have had such wonderful parents, and such a good and loving home.
Dad began thinking he would like to be a farmer so he bought a 20 acre farm a mile west of the Cement Plant and just east of the Bear River. One fall he and his brother Wilford went out and lived in a covered wagon on the farm to get up the beets. One afternoon as us kids came home from school, Mother met us at the door with a bundle of clean clothes for 4 of us and told us to go, John and I to Grandmother's, Norma and May to Grandma Christensen's. Dad had come home very ill and covered with small pox. Wilford and Fanny both got them also. Before he was well, Mother and the other kids also had them and mother the worst of all. We would go to the house every day to look in the windows to see all we could of the sick ones. Inez would stand up at the window and show us her one pox on her tummy. I think the Christmas that year was about the best one we ever had. Two days before the health officers came and fumigated the house and we all went home to our Lysol baths. It really didn't matter that there wasn't much Santa as we were all so glad to get home.
Both parents were very active in the ward. Mother a very dedicated Primary worker. Grandma McMaster would come down every Monday afternoon to tend the babies. Mother always sang in the choir, having a very lovely alto voice. She also was a great seamstress, making all our clothes.
Dad was a teacher in the different classes. Supt. in the Sunday School. I remember him most as President of the YMMIA. They liked to have dances quite often and one winter not having money for an orchestra he got a free one. Me on the piano, John on the violin, Lucius Johnson on the trombone and Clifford Petersen on the sax. We always started together on Lucius' down beat but seldom finished together. Dad liked to dance and was a good dancer, only he held you so darn tight you couldn't have missed a step if you wanted to.
When May was a baby they decided it was time to go to the Temple and take out their endowments and have the children sealed to them. Early one summer morning we left for Logan in Grandpa's surrey with a fringe on top. And his team of Dapple Greys. After the Temple Session we headed for home in the late afternoon. When we got near the Logan River Dad said, "I wonder how deep the water is?" The water was so clear you could see the bottom and it didn't seem to be running very swift. We soon found out how deep it was as he drove into it and the suitcases and lunch boxes went floating down the stream. He jumped into the water to rescue those things and mother drove the horses. Aunt Verna McMaster had gone with us this day to help with the baby Inez. Aunt Verna was killed soon after this.
Dad was also proud of his cars as he could get them. First a Model T Ford, then a Model A, then a Chevrolet.
About five years after Mother passed away Dad married Leona Vance. They had a darling baby boy, blue eyes and baby curly blond hair.   Dad died five years after this marriage at the age of 51 of pneumonia.

Inez died shortly after giving birth to her 10th child - a son, so I never did get to know her. Eli remarried and was still living when I was born, but I was too young to remember him. I just remember a photo of a very handsome blond man who looked tall as a tree to me."

Personal Remembrances: (E-mail from Jean Tyson 2-15-2010)
"John DeGray Christensen was born and raised in Brigham City. He left as a young adult to experience "the ways of the world." I know that he lived in San Francisco for a while, but as with most children I wasn't aware of all that happened. I do remember him later in his life when he returned to Utah. Not much was spoken of in the family about his problems. He was a semi-invalid when I knew him. My Dad later told me that he had a sexually-transmitted disease, but no one else ever said that. Doris used to send her daughter, Darlene, to his apartment in BC with dinner quite frequently, and Doris did take care of him there.
Apparently he was smoking in bed when his apartment caught on fire. He was badly burned. That was the reason for his long hospital stay (which I did not know about until seeing his death certificate). He never did marry, although a handsome man. I thought of him as gentle and troubled. I wondered about his time away from the family.
. . .I do know he was loved by his family and that they worried about him. It comforts me to know that he is now in the loving circle of his family, and I look forward to embracing him when we meet."

After Norma passed away Paul married Irma Lant, 24 June 1978 in Rexburg, Madison Co., Idaho. Irma had also formerly been married (to Howard Wayne Schuler).  She was born 29 April 1910 in Garland, Box Elder Co.;  She died just a few months after Paul in Sun City, Arizona and is buried there with Wayne.

"ERMA (IRMA) LANT was born 29 April 1910 in Garland, Box Elder County, Utah. She had two older sisters and two older brothers, Lucile, Donna, Glen, and Harold. There were two other brothers who had died as babies. When Erma was three years old the family moved back to their home town of Payson, Utah, where she attended the Peteetneet Elementary School. Here, in the first grade, she became acquainted with Howard Wayne Shuler, whom she was later to marry. They were "childhood sweethearts."
When Erma was only eight years of age, her mother Letitia Ann Davis Lant died in the flu epidemic, on 28 Jan 1919. (Howard's mother, Dora May Wightman Shuler also died in this same epidemic, as did many in Payson.) Erma recalls her mother as being very kind, loving, and patient. On one occasion, her mother had sent her out to the barn to feed the family cow in the wintertime. Erma came back sooner than expected, and looking out the window, her mother saw that Erma's tracks in the snow didn't go all the way to the barn. Instead of scolding, her mother patiently asked questions in order to teach her, such as "Don't you think that poor cow needs some food to stay warm in the winter? Don't you think she must be very hungry?" and so forth.
Erma's father John T. Lant remarried a year and a half after Letitia Ann's death. On 24 June 1920, when Erma was 10, he married Elizabeth Charlotte ("Lottie") Lee Finlayson. In addition to a stepmother, Erma also gained a younger step-sister and step-brother at this time: Leeta, age 8, and Bill, 3. Her two older sisters Lucile and Donna were already grown and married. Her brothers Glen and Harold were 14 and 12. Being a rather quiet child, Erma felt she was often overlooked, and she didn't ever develop a very close relationship with her stepmother. She did become quite close to her grandmother, Margaret Ann Miller Davis, who was a widow and lived in Spanish Fork. But Erma's family soon moved up to Washington State, where her father had been transferred for his career, and she had to leave all of her relatives and friends in Utah behind.
Her half-brother Dick was born in 1923 when Erma was thirteen, and her half-sister Nancy in 1928 when she was seventeen. The family moved three different times during the years in Washington State, so this was a very difficult time for Erma as she felt she had no place where she really belonged. But it sounds like she did enjoy the ocean; her older brother Harold (who later became an attorney and lived in Bellingham, Washington all of his life, and raised his family there), said that when he and Erma and Leeta were teenagers their family lived on the coast of Washington, on Puget Sound, and the three of them would swim out to a certain rock and back every day. They made a goal to do this every day for a whole year, but had to stop when the water got too cold in the winter.
Erma graduated from Whatcom High School in Bellingham, Washington in 1928, and at this time she changed the spelling of her name to "Irma." She was always a small and very slender, petite lady; only 4'11" tall, she claimed to be 5 feet. Her short stature was inherited from her Scottish ancestors. In her high school graduation picture Irma looked quite stylish, with her hair bobbed in the 1920's style, and she knew how to dance the Charleston, the popular dance at the time (sometimes she would still demonstrate this for her grandchildren). After her graduation from high school, Irma returned to Utah. She lived with her sisters in their homes in Ogden and worked as a secretary to earn enough money to go to college. She attended Brigham Young University at Provo and the Branch Agricultural College (now Southern Utah University) at Cedar City, Utah. The dean for whom she had been working at BYU was appointed to a new position at the Branch A.C., and asked her to come down there as his secretary since she was such a good one. At the time, she was dating Howard Shuler, with whom she had become reacquainted on visits to Payson, and after she moved to Cedar City he said that he soon became tired of driving all that way to date her, so he decided to ask her to marry him.
Howard and Irma were married on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 1931 at Payson, Utah, when they were both 20 years old (Irma was three months older than Howard). Their first child, Patsy Rae Shuler, was born Feb. 17, 1932 at Payson, but she lived only four days. Their second daughter, Sandra Shuler, was born 8 April 1934 at Payson. Irma's dear grandmother Margaret Davis died on the 6th of April 1934, but Irma was unable to attend the funeral because she was still confined to bed after the birth of Sandra. Howard and Irma's first son John David Shuler was born 6 April 1937 in Payson, and Michael Howard Shuler was born 10 Dec 1939, also in Payson. The family moved to the east bench of Salt Lake City in 1941. After the war the family moved to Tooele, Utah in 1946, where Howard worked for the Tooele Army Depot as an inspector. Their youngest child, Craig Lant Shuler, was born in Tooele 15 June 1951. The family moved back to Salt Lake City in 1956, where Irma was a secretary at the Veterans Administration Hospital, and Howard continued to work for the Tooele Army Depot.
After retirement, Howard and Irma moved to Sun City, Arizona in 1972 (while Craig was on his mission in Brazil). They went on cruises to Hawaii and Alaska, fulfilling a long-awaited desire to travel and see a bit of the world. Every summer they would come up to stay in Rexburg, Idaho with a group of Sun City residents, enjoying the cooler climate. Here Howard died suddenly of a heart attack, on 27 July 1977, at age 67.
Irma remarried on 24 June 1978, at age 68, to Paul DeOrr Tyson, a Sun City widower. Irma had been a Relief Society visiting teacher to Paul's wife Norma. When Norma passed away from cancer a few months after Howard's death, Paul returned a dish to Irma after the funeral. Then he started joining her on her daily early morning walks, and soon it developed into a courtship.
Paul and Irma decided to get married, and told all their children and grandchildren that the date was set for the fall of 1978 (Irma planned to wait until after she could have Howard's temple work done and be sealed to him. This had to be a year or more after his death). But when Irma and Paul went on a trip to Utah and Idaho to meet each other's families, they decided to go ahead and get married right away, by a bishop in Rexburg. He had to call their bishop in Sun City for approval. They didn't tell their children until afterwards, and we were all very surprised when we found out that Grandma had "eloped." They enjoyed 17 happy years together, living in Sun City (and in Rexburg for the summers until 1994). Paul took very good care of Irma. We called him "Grand-Paul." They were active in the Sun City Ward. Paul passed away on 1 Jan 1996 at age 87, and Irma passed away 2 May 1996 at age 86.
Howard Wayne Shuler and Irma Lant Shuler Tyson are both buried at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City, Arizona, but there is also a memorial marker for them in the Payson City Cemetery, since both of them had strong family roots there. Irma's second husband Paul DeOrr Tyson is buried in Brigham City, Utah, next to his first wife, Norma.

Paul and Norma - Brigham City Cemetery Plot B-46-6-3&4
Children of Paul DeOrr Tyson and Norma Vere Christensen:
#1) - - Jean Tyson.  Normally I don't publish much to this blog about people who are still living because of privacy issues, but Jean is an exception .  She is the source of nearly all these wonderful photos and deserves accolades from us all!
Don't you all agree that a blog post is MUCH improved when there are photos to look at & tidbits of data that go beyond the names, dates and places of an individual??  She has helped me love a branch of the Peter Adolph Forsgren family I had almost no experience with.  I admire Sarah and her posterity greatly.
Jean is a happy, generous soul who is my one-woman cheering team.  I so appreciate her willing heart to drop everything, answer my questions and mail me photos - and always, always thank me and prod me on in this monumental blogging endeavor!!
Jean lives in Washington State.   She will not mind if I share the following:

"Just a bit of information about me. I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah; graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Elementary Education/Music Education. I have taught in California, Utah, Arizona, Washington, and in the LDS Church Education System in both Tonga and Samoa. After retiring, I worked for another 10 years or so in pre-school education. So I guess you could say I am a teacher. I have never married, but I was given a beautiful baby while living in Samoa (That's a long and wonderful story for another time). My daughter, her husband, and three children live in Newcastle, WA, about 30 minutes from me. LIFE IS GOOD!"

Jean and her three grandchildren

Update April 2012:  After many months of correspondence with Jean I was finally able to meet her and spend a couple of hours with her contagious optimism, peace of mind and wonderful humor.  Victor and I are almost never in the state of Washington so this was a special opportunity.  (With a lovely, sunny Spring day to make it perfect).  I love and appreciate this woman dearly.  She is a blessing to all who know her.

Here we are - probably laughing at my husbands picture taking abilities.

#2) -- DeAnn Tyson, married to William Talliafero Crowe in 1966.  They are the parents of four children.

#3) -- Christy Tyson, born 15 July 1947;  Passed away 1 Jan 2011, Seattle, King Co., Washington
DEATH: The following email was received from Jean Tyson (Christy's sister) on January 29, 2011.  Christy's cremains were interred 14 Jan 2011 in Forest Lawn Cemetery, West Seattle.
Jeans's thoughts to me on 29 Jan 2011:
"Sorry I've taken so long to get in touch with you. My sister Christy passed on January 1, 2011.  We have been concentrating on her and all that needs to be done that time has slipped by.  She had serious health concerns, and her poor body just quit. She was not a member of the church, but that didn't stop her from being a wonderful person. We will be having a celebration of her life (as she planned) this Sunday, January 30th in West Seattle. She had many friends and had affected so many lives positively that it should be a happy time of rejoicing in a life well-lived. About a week prior to her death, we were visiting at her home. She said, "I set certain goals for my life, and I have accomplished them all. I am ready to leave." I just hope I can say as much when my time comes, although I suspect I'll have to 'fess up that I'm still working on most of them."
Christy as a young child

This is a sculpture made of Christy not long before she died.  It stand in Jean's entryway now, smiling at her and encouraging her on each day.

SONDRA CHENEY GOHMAN
Birth: Apr. 5, 1937 Salt Lake City Salt Lake County Utah, USA
Death: Mar. 2, 2004
Obituary: Deseret News, The (Salt Lake City, UT) - March 3, 2004
Sondra Cheney Gohman "We All Love You" Sondra Gohman, beloved grandmother, mother, sister, wife, and friend, passed away on March 2, 2004, after bravely fighting Lymphoma for five years. It's unfortunate this happens to such a good person. Sondra was born April 5th 1937, in Salt Lake City. She is the daughter of C. Glen and Neva Saxton Cheney. Sondra attended South High School and was a graduate of Salt Lake Community College. Previously married to Roger Van Roosendaal. Married Dick Gohman on February 27th, 1971. Sondra raised four fine sons, for the most part, by herself. Being a good person every day was most important to Sondra. Sondra's love, loyalty, and commitment to her family were unwavering. Sondra especially loved children. Sondra was the sweetest person. She loved everyone, but not naively.
She had run the St. George marathon and jogged in Central Park, the beaches of San Diego, and over the Golden Gate Bridge. She cross-country skied, especially at the family cabin outside of Heber. She loved nature and being out-of-doors. She loved all trips, large and small, for work or play. Favorites were the National Parks, the beauty of Alaska and Canada, England - home of some of her ancestors, and everything about Italy. Sondra was an avid reader and enjoyed good movies.
Sondra worked for many years at the Defense Contact Administration office and retired from the Federal Government after serving 20 years at the U.S. Probation Office. After retirement, representing what was important to her, Sondra volunteered at her granddaughter's kindergarten and elementary school, The Nature Conservancy, The Shriners Hospital, and for the Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild.
Survived by her husband; sons: Mark Van Roosendaal; Todd, Colorado; Kirk and wife, "Al"; and Brad and wife, Rene'e, Boise; brothers: Fred Cheney and wife, "Teddy"; and Craig and wife, Francie; grandchildren: Catie, Nate, Megan, and Ben; and step-mother, Madge Schlegel, Boise.
There will be a gathering of family and close friends in about a month in a beautiful setting. By that time humorous stories will be more likely to be appreciated. The family thanks close family, friends, and neighbors for their continued support and comfort. The family also thanks all of the doctors, nurses, and staffs for their compassionate and loving care and advice, especially: Dr. James P. Kushner, Jane Scholz, the wonderful nurses and staffs at Huntsman Cancer Institute Infusion, Clinic, and Pharmacy, U of U Hospital 5 North, Dr. Mark K. Dodson, Dr. Albert T. Vitale of the Moran Eye Center, and Dr. Mark H. Stevens of LDS Hospital. Our hearts go out to all of the wonderful medical people who helped extend Sondra's life.
The family requests that flowers or food not be sent. Instead of flowers or food the family suggests that donations be made to the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Sondra's name. A marker has been placed in the Bountiful Memorial Park Cemetery in Sondra's memory.

FRED G. CHENEY
Birth: May 4, 1939, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA
Death: Sep. 8, 2009, Holladay, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA

I was born to Clinton "Glen" and Neva Saxton Cheney in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 4, 1939.
I retired in 2005 as Chief Financial Officer and a member of the Board of Directors after 41 years service with Sentinel Security Life Insurance Company. During my career, I had the pleasure of working with a fine group of employees and formed many good relationships with many other professionals which I thoroughly enjoyed. I owe a great debt of gratitude to many people that were an important part of the Company, but I must offer a special thanks to Thomas W. Bartlett for the many years he and I served as officers. He was and, still is a good friend.
On May 17, 1994, I had the fortune to marry the love of my life, Teddy Staker, we were able to form a rewarding relationship that embellishes all that is important to happiness through understanding, love, sharing and the desire to spend quality time with each other. We loved to travel (especially cruising) and were fortunate to share many wonderful experiences.
Teddy has qualities for a relationship that make me wonder how or why I was so lucky to have her for my partner. She always understood how to make life worth the goodness it can be. I'm only sad that we couldn't have had more time to continue our enjoyment of life together. I appreciate her family, especially Jan and Rick Wester, Margaret and Mike Croley, David and Connie Staker who welcomed me into their lives and made me feel like their brother.
I am survived by my wife, Teddy, daughter, Sharon Rust, son, David Cheney, brother, Craig and special "adopted" daughter, Ashley Ashton. I have three grandchildren, Brynn, Taylor, and Kateland. I also have numerous step grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I would like to thank them all for their love and caring. I was pre-deceased by my older sister, Sondra Gohman, my step-son, Alan Benson, and my step-great-grandson, Adam Ashton.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street (100 East), where friends may call on Monday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Tuesday one hour prior to the services.    Interment: Murray City Cemetery.

Hazel Christensen
Last Residence Salt Lake City 84106
Died Dec 1980
SSN issued in Utah before 1951

BURIAL: Brigham City Cem; B-17-24-4

Hazel never married. She is mentioned frequently in the "doings" section for Brigham City in issues of the Ogden Standard Examiner (viewable on Ancestry.com) acting as hostess as well as attending social gatherings, working in schools, music. The following article appeared in the Sept 20, 1925 issue:

"BEFORE LEAVING
Mrs. Jesse B. Jensen and Miss Hortense Holst entertained at a bridge luncheon at the Holst home Monday evening, complimentary to Miss Hazel Christsensen, who is leaving this city to take up her work at the office of Attorney Wm. J. Lowe at Salt Lake. . . "

[Hazel is shown as a stenographer at a law office in Brigham City in the 1920 Census where she is residing in the family home with her widowed mother, her brother Emil and his wife] She was also honored on Oct 1, 1925 at a luncheon of the Business and Professional Woman's Club, of which she was President. She was presented with the club pin and responded with a speech. Luncheon served.]

Unfortunately there is more than one Hazel Christensen mentioned in the Ogden paper so it is not always easy to know which one is being referred to.

A scanned copy of Hazel's Funeral program in the photo book "Memories of Robert Blaine and Helen Cheney Hicks" produced by Julee Hicks and given to the Forsgren Family Assn. April 2012. It also includes an obituary (with photo of Hazel) which mentions that she was a legal secretary for Stephens-Brayton-Lowe
